What is Adoption Like?
If you are considering adoption as a pregnancy option, you may have some preconceived ideas about how adoption works. However, modern adoption is full of choices.
Adoption can be a hard but rewarding decision. Many women facing unintended pregnancies choose adoption if they don’t feel ready to parent but are uncomfortable with the idea of abortion. If that’s you, we can help.
Your Adoption Options
It’s important that you understand all of your options when it comes to adoption. As the birth mother, you choose the type of adoption plan you would like. You choose the family that will raise your child, and ultimately, you have the final choice of whether to release your child to the adoptive family or not.
Our caring staff can help connect you to the resources and agencies you need to feel confident in your decision. Here are the three adoption plans to choose from:
Open Adoption
An open adoption is the most common type of adoption as most women desire to have a relationship with their child. If you want to stay connected to both your child and the adoptive family, this option is most likely the best option for you. With open adoption, both parties will exchange full names, addresses and phone numbers. Your child can grow up having a relationship with you and visits with your child are common.
Closed Adoption
Sometimes life throws curveballs, and privacy is best for you when it comes to adoption. Whether it’s safety concerns or something else, closed adoption may be best for you if you don’t want ongoing communication with the adoptive family or your child after birth. With closed adoption, no identifying information is shared and your privacy is guaranteed.
Many women who choose this option do so because they feel ongoing communication would be too painful, or they may have a family situation that would endanger the child.
Semi-Open Adoption
Lastly, there is a semi-open adoption, which is somewhere in between an open and closed adoption. The first names of you and the adoptive family are shared, but no other identifying information is given. Communication occurs between you and the adoptive family, usually through the adoption agency or a third party. Again, you decide what type of communication you would like to have. This kind of adoption relationship is unique to each birth mom and family.
